LYON, JOHN, Esq. representative of the family, succeeded hid father, David Lyon,Esq. of Portland Place,London and of Jamaica, in June 1827.

ARMS: Argent, a lion rampant azure, armed and langued, within a double tressure flowered and counterflowered, gules. CRESTS: LYON, A lady to the girdle, holding in her right hand the royal thistle, inclosed in a circle of laurel proper, in allusion to the alliance of Sir John Lyon with Jean daughter of King Robert II. OCHTERLONY, Out of an eastern coronet, the rim inscribed with the word “Nepaul”,and arm embowed, habited gules, cuff azure, the hand grasping a baton, wreathed with laurel proper, second a swan, wings elevated, argent, collared, chain reflexed over the back and ducally crowned or charged on the breast with a rose gules. MOTTOES: “In te Domine Speravi”, for Lyon. “Prudentia et Animo” for Ochterlony.

Lineage. This family descends in the direct male line from the Honourable Sir Thomas Lyon,Knt.of Auldbar,Forfarshire,North Britain, who was designated Master of Glamis, as presumptive heir to the title, being brother of John, eighth Lord Glamis, grandfather of the first Earl of Strathmore.(see Burke’s Peerage and Baronetage).

Sir Robert Douglas, in his Peerage of Scotland, makes the following mention of Sir Thomas Lyon “He was one of the principal agents in the seizure of the person of King James VI. at the Raid of Ruthven, on the 23rd August 1582. The King going towards the door was stopped by the Master of Glamis, and bursting into tears, Glamis said,’No matter, better children weep than bearded men’. When the King recovered his liberty next year, the Master of Glamis retired into England and was forfeited 2nd March 1584, he returned to Scotland the same year, and with the Earls of Angus and Mar, seized on the Castle of Stirling, but was soon obliged to fly to England, he and other banished lords returning in 1585, with a great force, compelled Stewart,Earl of Arran, to quit the royal presence, and they were received into favour by James, who was pleased to appoint the Master of Glamis captain of his guard in place of Arran, and high treasurer of Scotland, he was constituted an extraordinary Lord of session, 9th February 1585, held it till 6th November 1591, constituted an ordinary Lord of session 28th March 1593, and sat till 28th May, same year. He was knighted at the coronation of James and Queen Anne 27th May 1590, he held the office of treasurer till 1595, had a charter to the Barony of Dod to Thomas Lyon, of Auldbar,knt. and Euphemia Douglas, his wife, 6th April 1594. At his death, King James said, that ‘the boldest and hardiest man in his dominions was dead’. He married first, Agnes, third daughter of Patrick, fifth Lord Gray, relict of Sir Robert Logan, of Restalrig, and Alexander fifth Lord Howe. Secondly, Lady Euphemia Douglas, fourth daughter of William, Earl Morton. He had a daughter married to Robert Semphill, of Belltrees, and a son John Lyon, of Auldbar who was served heir of Sir Thomas Lyon, of Auldbar,knt. his father, in the Barony of Melgund, lands of Auldbar, &c. 6th August 1608, he married a daughter of George Gladstones, Archbishop of St.Andrew’s”. His great grandson.

John Lyon,Esq. who settled at Brechin,North Britain, married Elizabeth Burn, also of Brechin, and had issue; John Lyon of whom presently; David Lyon married Isabel Greig and had issue several children, who all died young except Isabella and Margaret, she died unmarried in 1835.

The elder son John Lyon,Esq.of Castle Lyon in Perthshire, and Kinnaird in Fifeshire, married Jane daughter of Alexander Ochterlony,Esq.of Pitforthy, in the county of Angus, she was aunt and representative of the gallant Major-General Sir David Ochterlony,bart.GCB. who died unmarried 1825, they had issue; John Lyon died unmarried; David Lyon of Portland Place,London and Jamaica of whom presently; James Lyon died unmarried in Jamaica; Gilbert Lyon died young; Elizabeth Lyon died young; Margaret Lyon died unmarried; Mary Lyon married to Mr Allardice,Esq. and died sp.

The second son, David Lyon Esq. married to Isabella, eldest daughter of John Read,Esq. of Cairney, Forfarshire, by Anne only daughter of William Guthrie,Esq.of Cleppington and had issue; (1).John Lyon his heir; (2).James Lyon of Woolavington,Sussex married Frances Harriet daughter of Major General Thewles of Rockwood in the county of Roscommon,Ireland and has issue; Edmund David Lyon; James Carisbrook Lyon and Gertrude Lyon. (3).David Lyon of Goring,Sussex late MP. for Beeralston; (4).George Lyon; (5).William Lyon of New lodge,Berkshire Capt.8th Hussars and late MP.for Seaford. (6).Elizabeth Lyon married Lord Kilmaine and died December 1835 leaving issue three sons and five daughters (see Burke’s Peerage and Baronetage); (7).Isabella Lyon married 1stly, James Wedderburn,Esq. who died in 1834, by whom she had one son, I K Wedderburn,esq.2nd Life Guards. 2ndly,Charles Howe Fremantle, esq.Capt.RN. second son of Admiral Sir Thomas Fremantle,bart.GCB.(see Burke’s Baronetage); (8).Mary Lyon died unmarried in 1818 at Montauban in France; (9).Agnes Lyon married Col.John Fremantle,CB.Coldstream Guards, Aide-de-Camp to her majesty and has issue; (10).Emily Lyon married the Hon.Major N H C Massey, brother of Lord Clarina (see Burke’s Peerage).

Lineage. John Lyon of Brechin married Elizabeth Burn also of Brechin and had issue, the elder son.

John Lyon of Castle Lyon,Co.Perth and Kinnaird,Co.Fife, married Jane daughter of Alexander Ochterlony of Pitforthy,Angus, aunt and representative of the gallant Major Gen.Sir David Ochterlony,Bt.,GCB.,who died unmarried 1825 (see Burke’s Extinct Baronetage).

Their 2nd son David Lyon of Portland Place,London and of Jamaica married Isabella eldest daughter of John Read of Cairney,Co.Forfar by Anne his wife only daughter of William Guthrie of Cleppington and died 1827 leaving issue.

(4).George married Victorine Louise daughter of Monsieur Joseph Blane of Marseilles by his wife Adele Antoinstte Cecil de Perezzone, and by her left one daughter; Adele Antonia Desire Louise Lyon.

(7).Isabella married 1stly,James Wedderburn who died 1834, and 2ndly,8 October 1836 Sir Charles Howe Fremantle,GCB.,Admiral RN. 2nd son of Admiral Sir Thomas Fremantle,Bt.,GCB. She died his widow 26 December 1876.

(8).Mary died unmarried 1818 at Montauban in France.

(9).Agnes married 17 February 1829, Col.John Fremantle,CB.,Coldstream Guards,ADC.,to Queen Victoria and had issue.

(10).Emily married 8 May 1828 Col.the Hon.Nathaniel Henry Charles Massey brother of Eyre, 3rd Lord Clarina. She died sp.20 February 1897.

The 5th son William Lyon survived his brother Davin in Goring Hall,JP.Sussex,Major 8th Hussars, MP.for Seaford 1831-32, married 1860 Louisa Maria Sporle (died 3 March 1913) eldest daughter of Henry Valentine Smith, and had issue.

(2).Fitz Roy David late Lieut.1st Life Guards, born 1862 married 23 November 1897 Leila Bayard (41 Bryanston Square,London,W.1) only daughter of F J Crooke and died 1st March 1914 leaving issue; Joy Betty Marina Lyon she survived her uncle.

(3).Nathaniel John late Lieut.Grenadier Guards, born 18 August 1865, died 16 April 1907.

Major Lyon died 5 April 1892 and was survived by his son.

William Francis Henry Lyon of Goring Hall,Worthing,Sussex,JP.,Lord of the Manor of Goring,late Royal Sussex Militia, born 1861, survived his father 5 April 1892, married 12 December 1906 Adelaide Muriel (1 Hill Street,Berkeley Square,W.1) eldest daughter of the late Hon.Evelyn Cornwallis Anderson-Pelham (see Burke’s Peerage,Yarborough,E) and died 30 December 1925 and was survived by his niece Joy Betty Marina Lyon.

WALTER JOHN LYON. of Tutbury,co.Stafford, JP. for that county and for co.Derby, born 28 February 1841.

Lineage. Charles Walter Lyon, of Silver Hill,co.Stafford (son of Walter William Lyon, by his wife Jane Power), married 1838, Mary Ann daughter of John Webb, of Barton-under-Needwood, and by her (who died 24 October 1882) had issue:

(1). Walter John, now of Tutbury.

(2). Charles William of Manor House,Doveridge,co.Stafford, JP., born 1848; married 1876, and has issue, five sons and one daughter.

(3). Emily.

(4). Frances Ellen.

(5). Edith Jane.

Mr Lyon died 21 September 1874.

JOHN STEWART LYON, Of Kirkmichael,co.Dunfries, JP.,born 11 June 1868; survived 1881; married 9 August 1899. Esme, only daughter of Colin Dunlop of Lockerbie House,Dumfries.

ARMS: Argent, a lion rampant within the royal tressures of Scotland, az. CREST: A lady to the waist habited, holding a thistle in her dexter hand, all within garlands of laurel leaves and berries. MOTTO: In te Domine Speravi.

Lineage. David Lyon of Cossens, 2nd son of John Lyon, 3rd Lord Glamis (see Burke’s Peerage Strathmore), by Elizabeth, daughter of Sir John Scrymgeour of Dudhope, was killed at Flodden with his two brothers 1513; He married Elizabeth daughter of David Lyndsay, Duke of Montrose, 5th Earl of Crawford and by her he had two sons:

(1). John his heir.

(2). George, who had a charter of the lands of Balgonie, 1529, died sp.

John Lyon, of Cossens, declared next heir of entail in 1567 to the barony and estates of Glamis, held the castle of Craigmillar in 1513, married Margery daughter of James, Lord Ogilvy of Airlie, by whom he had two sons:

(1). John, his heir.

(2). Patrick, who got a charter of the lands of Balgonie 1553, died sp.

The elder son John Lyon of Cossens married a daughter of Gardyne of Gardyne, by whom he had two sons, the elder of whom carried on the Cossens branch of the family, which was lost sight of after 1677, when the estate was sold.

The 2nd son George Lyon, got a tack of the lands of Balmuchtie from his father; he is styled Younger of Cossens in a deed 1586; married Catherine Wishart, by whom he had three sons:

(1). John who succeeded.

(2). Thomas.

(3). George.

The eldest son John Lyon who acquired the lands of Wester Ogil in 1653, married Catherine Ogilvy, by whom he had four sons:

(1). George his heir.

(2). James.

(3). Sylvester.

(4). John.

The eldest son George Lyon, of Wester Ogil, married Jean daughter of James Nisbet, by whom he had eight sons and four daughters.

His son George Lyon of Wester Ogil, born 1711; died 1793; married Mary Roger, by whom he had four sons and two daughters:

(1). William of Wester Ogil, died sp.

(2). Hugh of Wester Ogil, born 1748, whose descendants carried on the Wester Ogil branch.

(4). James, DD.,Minister of Glamis, born 1759; died 1838; married Agnes, daughter of L’Amy, of Dunkenny, leaving issue.

(1). George of Kirkmichael and Dalruscan, Lieut-Col. 2nd Life Guards, born 1804; died 1879, sold Kirkmichael to his brother; married Phoebe, daughter of Admiral Johnston of Cowhill,co.Dumfries, by whom he had five sons and five daughters:

(1). George Adam, born 7 January 1828; died 1839.

(2). Charles James, HEICS.,born 22 December 1828, died 1856; married Maria, daughter of William Crauford, Barrister-at-law, Bombay, and left issue.

(3). John Elliot, RN., killed 1870.

(4). Cecil Edward, born 5 August 1842, late Capt. 77th Regt.;married 1872 Maude, 3rd daughter of Charles Palmer Morewood, of Alfreton,Derbyshire, and of Ladbroke Hall,co.Warwick.

The eldest son, George Francis Lyon of Kirkmichael, Commander RN.,entered the service 1851, served in the Black Sea and Baltic during the Crimean war, and in China at the taking of the Teiko Forts 1859, born 6 September 1837; died 22 March 1881; married 1867 Emma Ramsay, daughter of James Stark, Esq., MD., FRS.,of Huntfield,co.Lanark, by whom he had three sons and three daughters:

(1). John Stewart, his heir, now of Kirkmichael.

(2). Adam Walter, born 14 November 1870; married September 1897, Elima, 4th daughter of Michael Balmain.

(1). John George (Witcombe Park,Witcombe,Gloucester), born 13 January 1901, married and has with other issue a son born 9 October 1929.

Of 10 Blomfield Road,W.9, late Gordon Highlanders, served in Borneo 1965-66, born 12 September 1941, educ. Harrow and Selwyn Coll.Camb., married 29 March 1967 Madeline Rosa Edith only daughter of Major Herbert Frederick Brudenell Foster, TD.,JP.,of Park House,Drumoak, Aberdeenshire (see Vol.1,Foster formerly of Hornby Castle) and has issue-Charles Henry Lyon born 28 July 1971.

Mary Lyon married 1895 Rev.Percy Stewart, Rector of West Derby,Liverpool and had issue.

Florence Lyon married 18 October 1905 Major Charles Speke of The Croft,Combe St.Nicholas, Chard, Somerset, 3rd son of Rev.Benjamin Speke, Rector of Washfield,Devon and had issue (see Speke Rowlands, formerly of Jordans).

Agnes Gardener Lyon died unmarried 1883.

Eliza Mary Lyon married Ven.Archdeacon Greenall and died sp.10 November 1878, he died 2 November 1867.

Georgiana Lyon, CI.,married 4 May 1852, 1st Viscount Cross,PC.,GCB.,GCSI., and died 20 January 1907, having had issue (see Burke’s Peerage) he died 8 January 1914.

Adelaide Lyon died unmarried.

Lineage- The family of Lyon is of Scottish descent and ranks amongst the most ancient and distinguished families of the North. The ancestor of the branch before us, Thomas Lyon, born about 1626, served in the Scots Greys and having left his native country, settled at Warrington, in Lancashire, where he purchased property and died in 1694 leaving issue, by Dorothy his wife,

John Lyon of Warrington, who purchased estates in Appleton. He was born in 1688 and married Margaret daughter and co-heiress of Thomas Edwardson of Peel House,Lancashire, by whom he had issue; Thomas his heir; Matthew, of whom hereafter as successor to his brother; Ellen married Edward Pemberton,Esq.,MD.,of Warrington, grandfather of the Right Hon. Thomas Pemberton Leigh, one of her Majesty’s Counsel, late MP. for Ripon.

The elder son Thomas Lyon,Esq.,of Warrington, succeeded to the Appleton property, but died unmarried 29 December 1776 when the estates devolved on his brother.

Matthew Lyon,Esq.,born in 1716, who married Ellen daughter and co-heiress of James Fairclough,Esq (by margaret his wife, sister of the Rev.Dr. Baldwin, Prebend of Carlisle and Rector of Aldingham, whose daughter married Sir Robert Clayton,Bart. of Adlington Hall,Lancashire) of Wigan by whom he acquired property there, now enjoyed by the present Mr Lyon. By her he left issue, at his decease, 8 June 1782, with a daughter, Ellen married to Joseph Parr,Esq. of Fir Grove,West Derby, two sons;

Lineage: This family is of Milesian origin, a branch of the O’Lyehane, O’Liathan, or O’Lehan race, having settled in co.Limerick from co.Cork, in the early part of the seventeenth century.

James O’Lyne settled at Croome,co.Limerick and died at Croome House, 1740 having issue with one daughter and a son, his successor.

The second son Maurice Victor Lyons of Currabinny,Carrigoline,Co.Cork and Tyronnel, Perrott Avenue, Cork, born 3 June 1872, educ.Downside, married 12 July 1912 Maria Elinor (died 6 June 1947) 2nd daughter of George Abraham Sutton of Windsor,Douglas,Co.Cork and Bunnyconellen, Myrtleville,Co.Cork and died 15 January 1943 leaving issue-Reginald Francis George Lyons of whom we treat; Lydia Mary Lyons born 12 August 1916, married 22 June 1938 Wallis Maynard Goslett (Troloy House,Abbots Langley,Herts) son of Gordon Goslett of Holmberry, Bushey Heath

Herts and has issue-Peter Maynard Goslett born 25 October 1941; Rowland William Goslett born 27 September 1946; Ann Rosalie Goslett born 3 April 1939. Daphne Elizabeth Lyons served in World War II. 1944-46 in American Ambulance Corps. born 11 September 1921, married 9 October 1946 Robert Paterson (Temple Lawn,Ballintemple,Blackrock,Co.Cork) son of Robert H Paterson of Temple Lawn, Blackrock, Co.Cork and has issue-Andrew Paterson born 11 October 1949.
