Clan Farquharson Connection

About 1723, after the LYON family was formally recognized as an independant Scottish Clan,  a group of BOWMANs from Glenmuick and Glenesk petitioned the Earl of Strathmore, Chief of Clan Lyon, for permission to resume the surname LYON, claiming that their ancestors were members of the Lyon Family, who had moved into the mountainous regions of Deeside and had sworn fealty to the Chief of Clan Farquharson.

The Earl of Strathmore granted their request,  however, the families
chose keep their allegiance to Clan Farquharson. Thus the surname LYON became recognized as a Sept of Clan Farquharson.
