Lineage of the Family of Lyons of Warkworth Castle,Northants, Ledestown Hall,Westmeath, St.Austins Park,Hants and Cherryhinton Hall,Cambs.

(Descent from the Norman family of Lyons of Warkworth is supposition and I have no conclusive evidence in support, but have been much influenced by certain coincidence)

Sir John de Lyons, a Norman Baron of ancient lineage, crosses to England in the reign of William the Conqueror, circa 1080, and was granted extensive lands in Northamptonshire.

His grandson Sir John de Lyons, living 1154, was granted the estates of Warkworth, in Northamptonshire, by Henry II., circa 1160.

His son Sir John de Lyons, of Warkworth Castle, born in the reign of Henry III. married Margaret, daughter of Sir John Chetewode, dying in 1312.

His son Sir John Lyons, of Warkworth Castle, born in 1299, and fought at Crecy and Poictiers. His daughter and heir, Margaret Lyons, married John Chetewode, her cousin, and inherited Warkworth, which passed into the Chetewode family.

His cousin Richard Lyons, born 1342, was Lord of the Exchequer and attached to the Court of Edward III. He was impeached with Lord Latimer by the Commons before the House of Lords in 1376 for embezzling the Kings Revenue, and though he sent £1000 in a barrel to the Black Prince as a bribe, he was subsequently arrested.

His grandson William Lyons was Governor of Bordeaux in the reign of Henry V. circa.1420.

His grandson Richard Lyons, living circa.1500.

His son Sir Richard Lyons, was Governor of Calais in the reign of Henry VIII. and domiciled in France, espoused the Huguenot Faith.
