Argent, on a mount vert, between four fleurs-de-lys azure, a lion rampant gules. Mantling: gules and argent. Crest: On a wreath argent and vert, a plate charged with a lion rampant gules, collared and chained or. Motto: "Virtute et Fidelitate".

LYONS, JAMES DENIS, of Croome House,co.Limerick, born 28 September 1877.

Lineage: This family is of Milesian origin, a branch of the O’Lyehane, O’Liathan, or O’Lehan race, having settled in co.Limerick from co.Cork, in the early part of the seventeenth century.

James O’Lyne settled at Croome,co.Limerick and died at Croome House, 1740 having issue with one daughter and a son, his successor.

Denis Lyne or Lyons,Esq. of Croome House, born 1689; married 1723 Mary Lenham, by whom (who died 29 December 1774) he had issue:

(1). James, born 1729, settled in Limerick and married 20 October 1757, Mary daughter of David Hourugan, Esq.,and died 8 June 1788, having had issue.

(1). Denis, born 4 November 1761; died unmarried 6 November 1826.

(2). David, born September 1765; died unmarried 1799.

(3). James, born 20 October 1767, died unmarried September 1841.

(4). Christian, died unmarried 16 December 1836.

(5). Johanna, married 29 June 1801 Richard England and died sp. June 1836.

(6). Mary, married 28 August 1799, John Kelly, Esq. and died 15 March 1830, leaving issue (see Kelly of Rockstown).

(2). Denis, of whom hereafter.

(3). Catherine, married 14 June 1760, James Scully,Esq.of Kilfeacle,co.Tipperary, and died 30 June 1818, leaving issue (see Scully of Mantle Hill).

(4). Mary, married 5 August 1768, John Canny,Esq. of Ballycasey,co.Claire, and died 25 November 1823, leaving issue.

Mr Lyons died 22 November 1777. His 2nd son:

Denis Lyons, Esq. of Croome House, JP.,born 1749; married 9 August 1779, Christian, eldest daughter of Thomas Casey, Esq.,MP.,by whom (who died August 1823) he had issue:

(1). Denis, born 6 October 1782; died unmarried 30 March 1803.

(2). Thomas, born 9 May 1784; died young.

(3). James Denis, born 5 July 1785, his successor.

(4). Henry, born 27 June 1786; died unmarried 10 March 1837.

(5). John, born 2 July 1789; married 21 September 1819, Helen daughter of D Daly,Esq.,who died 26 January 1875. He died 18 June 1828, and had issue:

(1). John Edward, born 27 June 1823; married 24 October 1868, Gertrude daughter of Rev.F Hewson and died 10 October 1877.

(2). Christian, married 1852, Thomas Gallwey, Esq.

(3). Helena, married 1854, Daniel Cronin Coltsman,Esq. of Glenflesk Castle,Killarney.

(6). Thomas, born 26 January 1795; died unmarried 1822.

(7). Helen, married 20 October 1802, Roger Scully,Esq. and died April 1860.

(8). Johanna, married 15 October 1811, Daniel Clanchy, Esq.of Charleville, and died 30 December 1840.

(9). Christian,died 3 January 1855.

(10). Mary, died January 1820.

Mr Lyons died 5 July 1809, and was succeeded by his eldest surviving son.

James Denis Lyons Esq. of Croome House, JP.,DL.,High Sheriff 1853, born 5 July 1785; married 31 March 1818, Bridgette, eldest daughter of John Kennedy, Esq. of Limerick, by whom he had issue:

(1). Denis, born 21 May 1822; died unmarried 16 November 1841.

(2). John, born 10 August 1823; died unmarried 10 April 1849.

(3). Henry, of Croome House.

(4). Thomas Casey, Lieut.-Gen. in the army, CB.,born 9 July 1829; married 6 January 1863, Helen daughter of George Young, Esq. of Apley Towers,Ryde, and has issue:

(1). Henry George, born 11 October 1864.

(2). Helen Amy.

(5). James, Capt. RA.,born 3 February 1832; died 12 June 1862.

(6). Edward, born 28 November 1836, Colonel RA.; married 15 May 1862, Alice Smith.

(7). Anna Maria, married 10 February 1840, George Sampson,Esq. of St.Catherines,co.Clare, and has issue.

(8). Christina, married 3 July 1844, James Morrogh,Esq. of Old Court.co.Cork.

(9). Mary Jane, died 12 April 1825.

(10). Helena.

(11). Bessie, died 4 November 1841.

(12). Frances Hortense, died 26 April 1857.

(13). Wilhelmina, married 29 April 1876, Michael Russell,Esq. of Glenmore,co.Cork, and died 14 March 1877.

Mr Lyons died 2 April 1853, and was succeeded by his eldest surviving son.

Henry Lyons,Esq. of Croome House, JP.,DL.,High Sheriff 1860, born 18 May 1828; married 14 May 1873, Olivia Millicent, eldest daughter of Lord Robert Montagu, PC.,by his first wife Ellen Mary, only child of John Cromie,Esq.of Cromore,co.Londonderry, and had issue:

(1). James Denis, now of Croome House.

(2). Henry Montagu, born 1880.

(3). John Cromie.

(4). Mary Eleanor.

(5). Olivia Millicent.

(6). Ethel Christine Bertha.

Mr Lyons died 1885.
