CLIVE LYON

Of 10 Blomfield Road,W.9, late Gordon Highlanders, served in Borneo 1965-66, born 12 September 1941, educ. Harrow and Selwyn Coll.Camb., married 29 March 1967 Madeline Rosa Edith only daughter of Major Herbert Frederick Brudenell Foster, TD.,JP.,of Park House,Drumoak, Aberdeenshire (see Vol.1,Foster formerly of Hornby Castle) and has issue-Charles Henry Lyon born 28 July 1971.

Arms: Az. a lion passant between three plates, each charged with a griffin’s head erased sa. Crest: In front of a lion’s head erased arg. two hurts fesswise. Motto: "Pro rege et patria"

Lineage- Thomas Lyon, left Scotland and settled at Warrington,Lancs.,where he purchased property, born about 1626, youngest son of George Lyon of Balmuchtie,Angus. youngest of Cossins(see Burke’s Peerage, Strathmore and Kinghorne,E), married Dorothy, and died 1694 leaving issue,

John Lyon of Warrington, purchased estates in Appleton, born 1688, married Margaret daughter and co-heiress of Thomas Edwardson,of Peel House, Lancs. and had issue.

(1).Thomas Lyon of whom presently.

(2).Matthew Lyon who survived his brother.

(3).Ellen Lyon married Edward Pemberton,MD.,of Warrington and had issue(see Vol.1 Leigh Pemberton of Torry Hill, and Burke’s Dormant and Extinct Peerages, Pemberton-Leigh – Baron Kingsdown).

The elder son Thomas Lyon of Warrington and Appleton died unmarried 29 December 1776 and was survived by his brother Matthew Lyon of Appleton born 1716, married Ellen daughter and co-heiress of James Fairclough of Wigan and died 8 June 1782 leaving issue-

(1).Thomas Lyon of whom presently.

(2).James Lyon (Rev), Rector of Prestwich,Lancs, married Mary only daughter of Edmund Radcliffe and had, with other issue-(1).James Radcliffe Lyon (Rev), Rector of Pulford,Cheshire born 11 July 1785, married 18 May 1814, Frances daughter of George Clayton of Lostock and had issue; (2).Thomas Lyon survived his uncle.

(3).Ellen Lyon married Joseph Parr of Fir Grove,West Derby,Lancs.

The elder son Thomas Lyon of Appleton,JP.,Lt.Col.Warrington Vols.,born 15 November 1756 died unmarried 18 September 1818, having devised his estates to his nephew.

Thomas Lyon of Appleton Hall,DL.,JP.,born 2 December 1786 married 28 February 1820 Eliza youngest daughter of George Clayton of Lostock Hall, Lancs. by his wife Dolly daughter of Lt.Col.William Gardener and sister of 1st Baron Gardener (see Burke’s Peerage) and died 17 August 1859 having had issue; (1).Thomas Lyon born 29 June 1823, married December 1863 Helena daughter of Baron Posse of Alsponga, Sweden and died 28 November 1885; (2).Thomas Henry Lyon of whom presently; (3).Charles Lyon born 29 November 1832 and died 1849; (4).Francis Lyon Col.RHA.,born 11 January 1834, married 23 June 1863 Flora (died 4 August 1924) youngest daughter of Hon.Arthur Anneslsey and sister of 11th Viscount Valentia (see Burke’s Peerage) and died 26 February 1885, leaving issue; (1).Charles Lyon survived his uncle; (2).Francis Lyon,CB.(1921), CMG.(1916), CVO.(1922), DSO. (1900),Hon.Brig.Gen., formerly Col.RFA., Mil.Attache,Brussels 1918, had Belgian Croix de Guerre, born 10 July 1867, married 18 August 1910 Winifred Jane (died 13 November 1961) elder daughter of Joseph Cooksey Borwick of 27 Prince’s Gate,SW. (see Burke’s Peerage, Borwick,B) and died 21 February 1953 having had issue; (1).Paul Lyon born 9 October 1912 died 1926; (2).Ivan Lyon,DSO.(1944), MBE.(1943), Lt.Col.The Gordon Highlanders served in World War II.,born 12 August 1915, educ.Harrow, and RMA.Woolwich, married 27 July 1939 Gabrielle Anna Georgina daughter of the late Claude Bouvier,Legion d’honneur, Croix de Guerre, Croix de la Liberation (posthumous) and was killed in action on or shortly after 14 October 1944, leaving issue; Clive Lyon of whom we treat; (3).Frank Lyon served in World War II. as Capt.Royal Intelligence Corps.(Trentham,Fresnaye

Arthur Lyon late Major South African Constabulary, Capt.(ret. pay) Border Regt.,born 25 January 1869, educ. Wellington, married 6 February 1913 Gladys Anita (who married 2ndly, 13 June 1927, Lt.Col. Charles Lyon,DL.,JP.,of Appleton Hall (see below) and died 4 January 1954) youngest daughter of Capt.Charles Stuart of Durban,South Africa and died 21 January 1920 leaving issue; Stuart Rennie Lyon born 25 June 1914, educ.Wellington died unmarried 24 January 1941; Hazel Arthur Lyon (Orchard Way, Finchingfield, Essex) born 6 November 1917.

Henry Lyon formerly Assist.Dist.Commr.Niger Coast Protectorate, served in South African War with 3rd South Lancs.Regt. and South African Inf. and in World War I.,born 10 August 1872, educ.Wellington, married 17 January 1917 Laura (4 Stanhope Court,Silverdale Road,Eastbourne) daughter of Victor A Lagerwall, of Port Elizabeth, South Africa and died sp. 22 November 1940.

Mary Lyon married 1895 Rev.Percy Stewart, Rector of West Derby,Liverpool and had issue.

Florence Lyon married 18 October 1905 Major Charles Speke of The Croft,Combe St.Nicholas, Chard, Somerset, 3rd son of Rev.Benjamin Speke, Rector of Washfield,Devon and had issue (see Speke Rowlands, formerly of Jordans).

Agnes Gardener Lyon died unmarried 1883.

Eliza Mary Lyon married Ven.Archdeacon Greenall and died sp.10 November 1878, he died 2 November 1867.

Georgiana Lyon, CI.,married 4 May 1852, 1st Viscount Cross,PC.,GCB.,GCSI., and died 20 January 1907, having had issue (see Burke’s Peerage) he died 8 January 1914.

Adelaide Lyon died unmarried.

The 2nd son Thomas Henry Lyon, of Appleton Hall,Cheshire,DL.,JP.,High Sheriff 1867, late Lieut.RN.,sometime Capt.of Militia, born 28 October 1825, married 1stly,24 July 1860 Vanda (died 17 July 1861) 3rd daughter of John Wilson-Patten. later 1st Baron Winmarleigh (see Burke’s Peerage, 1892 edn.) He married 2ndly, 11 June 1872 Edith Grace (died 12 March 1929) only daughter of William Hill Branker, of Bispham Hall,Lancs.,and died 13 February 1914 having by her had issue; Dorothy Lyon born 1876 married 7 June 1904, 2nd Baron Acton, KCVO.,and died 17 March 1923, leaving issue (see Burke’s Peerage) He died 16 June 1924.

His nephew Lt.Col.Charles Lyon of Appleton Hall,Cheshire,DL.,JP.,High Sheriff 1924, Lt.Col. late RFA.,born 7 April 1865, educ.Wellington and RMA. Woolwich, married 1stly, 17 July 1894 Rachel Mary Fearne (died 30 June 1926) only child of Sir Arthur Havelock,GCSI.,GCMG.,GCIE.,Gov. of Ceylon and had issue; Francis Charles Lyon.Lieut.Gren.Gaurds, born 25 May 1895, educ.Eton, killed in action 13 April 1918; Margaret Grace Lyon born 28 February 1899, married 18 September 1927 Douglas Du Bois Davidson (27,Halsey Street,SW.3) son of late Sir Walter Davidson KCMG.

He married 2ndly, 13 June 1927 Gladys Anita (died 4 January 1954) widow of his brother Major Arthur Lyon (see above) and youngest daughter of Capt. Charles Stuart of Durban,South Africa and died 29 February 1944.
