Sir Roger de Brus (1184-1237)

Born circa 1184

Inspeximus and confirmation of charters and grants to the Friars Preachers of Jarum, dated at York, 6 Sept 1314:  ‘ A charter of Peter de Brus the third, granting to them in frank almoin, for the good of his own soul and the soul of Hillary his wife,….. witnesses, Roger de Brus his uncle, Roger de Thokotes, John de Burtona, knights, …[CPR 8 Edw II (1313-1317), mem. 24 , p. 17121]

‘Johannes de Fayrfax ‘, held 1 carucate in Walton with Henry de Camera: he was described as  ” Son of Thomas Fairfax of York, who was dead by 1261, by Agnes daughter and heiress of Henry de Sezevaux, mayor of York temp. Henry III (Sir Thomas Widdrington’s MS., fo. 101).  By his wife Clare, daughter and heiress of William Scott, by Constance, daughter and co-heiress of Sir Roger Brus of Walton (Thoresby’s Ducat. Leod.), John Fairfax had a son and heir, Thomas Fairfax…  ” [Kirkby’s Inquest, p. 220 and note y22]

Discussing first the Brus family of Scotland, Blakely wrote,  ‘ No younger sons of the Yorkshire Bruses are known to have fared so well.  The younger sons of Peter I, Simon  and Roger, received small grants within the Yorkshire  barony from their brother or nephew; Simon’s lands were  at Loftus and Roger’s at Walton, one of the Arches  manors.'[Ruth M.
